Curriculum
How does the programme work?
International Course (PreDP)
The IB Diploma Programme is a two-year course while the Swedish upper-secondary school lasts three years. Therefore we offer a preparatory year which is called PreDP.

DP 1 and 2
Students will follow the International IB curriculum in the second year of upper secondary.
The IB DP model [1]:

©International Baccalaureate Organization, 2018
International-mindedness is a view of the world in which people see themselves connected to the global community and assume a sense of responsibility to its members. [2]
The IB Learner profile is at the heart of the model. The IB is committed to the development of students according to it. The profile aims to develop learners who are: Inquirers, Knowledgeable, Thinkers, Communicators, Principled, Open-minded, Caring, Risk-takers, Balanced, and Reflective.
The next circle of the model shows Approaches to teaching and learning. These deliberate strategies, skills, and attitudes permeate the teaching and learning environment. Intrinsically linked with the IB learner profile attributes, these approaches and tools enhance student learning and assist student preparation for DP assessment and beyond. [3]
The Core of the IBDP has three required components, which aim to broaden students' educational experience and challenge them to apply their knowledge and skills.
The three core elements are:
- Theory of knowledge, in which students reflect on the nature of knowledge and on how we know what we claim to know.
- The extended essay, which is an independent, self-directed piece of research, finishing with a 4 000-word paper.
- Creativity, activity, service, in which students complete a project related to those three concepts.
The fourth circle of the model show the six academic areas:
- Group 1: Language and literature.
- Group 2: Language Acquisition.
- Group 3: Individuals and Societies.
- Group 4: Sciences.
- Group 5: Mathematics.
- Group 6: The Arts or another subject from the groups 1-4.
Students choose one subject from each group, three at the standard level (SL) and the other three at the higher level (HL).
That means that every student studies:
- two modern languages
- a humanities or social science subject
- an experimental science
- mathematics
- another subject from the above mentioned.
In addition, three core elements – Theory of knowledge, the extended essay, and Creativity, activity, and service – are compulsory and central to the philosophy of the programme.
This comprehensive range of subjects makes the Diploma Programme a demanding course of study designed to prepare students effectively for university entrance.
The IB recommends 240 teaching hours for HL subjects and 150 hours for SL. Subjects at HL are studied in greater depth and breadth than at SL. [4]
More about the core
What is TOK?
TOK stands for Theory of Knowledge. Whereas other subjects usually raise questions only within their field (subject-specific questions often with one clear answer to them), TOK looks at second-order questions. TOK strives to take a step back - or forward – and looks at the process of gaining knowledge in general, raising open questions, open for discussion, claims, and arguments.
In TOK, we consider questions like “To what extent is the knowledge gained in the Natural Sciences more reliable than the knowledge gained in the Arts”? In what ways is our knowledge limited? To what extent is knowledge lost in translation? What role does language play in understanding and the process of acquiring knowledge?
We explore what knowledge really means and what a knower is: what characteristics does a knower have? What is knowledge compared to information, what is understanding, what are facts and data, what role do models and metaphors play in gaining knowledge.
At the core of the TOK course are two optional themes: We can look at topics such as language knowledge, politics, technology, religion, or indigenous societies.
All these issues are examined in a specific framework: We consider the scope, methods and tools, perspective as well as ethical implications that knowledge has in the areas of Mathematics, History, Natural Sciences, Human Sciences as well as the Arts.
Students will share their ideas with a broader audience via two IB assessments: they choose an exhibition of objects and link it to a knowledge issue resulting in a TOK essay on a given knowledge question.
Thus, in TOK, we link all subjects and take into account real-life experiences. We question our own beliefs and perspectives. In TOK, we strive for confusion; we strive to reset our minds or way of thinking and, by doing so, grow into reflective thinkers.
What is the Extended Essay (EE)?
The "Extended Essay" is another core component of the IB Diploma - and if you ask former students, also what makes them particularly proud in retrospect. The EE is a detailed study or investigation of a specific topic. The students independently choose a topic from one of the IB subjects. A subject teacher supports the students continuously as a supervisor during the research and writing process.
The extended essay should contain about 4000 words; as usual with scientific work, it includes a structure, footnotes, and a bibliography.
The essay is typically planned in the first year of the IB (DP 1) in the summer holidays between the first and second year, so there is sufficient time to work with the topic.
What is Creativity, Action & Service (CAS)?
CAS stands for creative, sporting/active, and social/charitable activities and projects every student must complete as part of the IB DP. Every student is responsible for their own projects, although teamwork is also encouraged. The goal should be that students use their abilities to benefit others, develop their talents, and promote undiscovered talents. In addition to cognitive learning, this should also support and encourage individual personality development since one's actions must always be reflected on and planned.
Important: CAS is not graded, but the student reflects on the learning outcome and what consequences the individual draws from it for the future.
CAS lessons include extra-curricular activities that can take place both in and outside the school. As a result, the spectrum for suitable CAS activities is very large. Above all, the students should be active and look for their own CAS activities. The CAS coordinator will help and advise.
The IB students carry out CAS activities for 18 months, with all areas (creativity - activity - service) being given roughly equal consideration. Various CAS activities are possible throughout the period. Why not take part in an international work camp during part of the school holidays?
All CAS projects are planned, carried out, and reflected on by the students, but always with the support of the CAS coordinator.
IB Diploma and IB Certificates
IB Diploma
During the two DP years, the students will write several tasks in different subjects (internal assessment), initially marked by the subject teacher but then sent to the IB for central marking. Besides these exercises, the students will sit exams in all six subjects at the end of DP 2, called external assessments. The grades of the internal and external assessments create the total score, and about two months later, the results will be published. IB diplomas which are internationally accepted, are issued to students with passing grades.
Please check our Assessment policy for more detailed information.
IB Certificates
Sometimes, a student may need help to cope with the many challenges in the IB Diploma programme. In that case, it is possible to receive individual IB Certificates for each subject they pass. If the student only takes personal certificates, they do not have to include the Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay, or CAS areas.
Every student will be supported by our Well-being team, which consists of a study counsellor, a coordinator for students with special educational needs, special-ed teachers, social counsellors, a student assistant, and a school nurse.
Please check our Inclusion/Special educational need policy for more detailed information.
