CCTV monitoring in schools
Some schools in Karlskrona municipality have CCTV monitoring. CCTV monitoring in schools is aimed at preventing and hindering serious incidents and contributing to a safe school environment. The Swedish Data Protection Authority is the supervisory authority as regards CCTV monitoring in schools.

Why are CCTV cameras used in schools?
Schools in Karlskrona municipality are actively engaged in combating violence. Situations involving threats, violence, fire, thefts or similar phenomena are taken extremely seriously. CCTV monitoring represents part of the preventive safety work in the school and a way of preventing serious incidents.
When can a CCTV camera be set up in the school?
According to the CCTV Monitoring Act and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), CCTV monitoring may take place when there is a legal basis for doing so. The legal basis for CCTV cameras in the school is that, according to the Education Act, all pupils are entitled to a safe school environment characterised by peace and calm. CCTV monitoring of places to which the general public has access, such as the school yard, requires a permit.
Are the cameras located outdoors or indoors?
Some schools only have cameras indoors, while others only have them outdoors. Some schools have cameras both indoors and outdoors.
Who has access to the material?
Only personnel from the security and safety unit, as well as the IT unit, have access to the audiovisual material.
Can the audiovisual material be disclosed to other parties?
Recorded material is covered by the Access to Public Information and Secrecy Act. This means that material from CCTV monitoring may not be disclosed to parties other than to public authorities engaged in fighting crime. A film may be provided to the Police if there is suspicion of an offence or if the Police request to see a film.
How long can audiovisual material be saved?
Audiovisual material from indoor CCTV cameras is saved for 14 days.
Can sound be recorded in CCTV monitoring?
Sound cannot be recorded in CCTV monitoring.

What are my rights?
Provisions regarding the right to information about the processing of personal data that CCTV monitoring involves are set forth in the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Your rights are as follows:
• To obtain access to your personal data
You can obtain information about the personal data that the municipality registers and uses, the source of the data and what the municipality uses it for. You can obtain information about how long your data is stored, the identity of recipients of your personal data and whether the municipality discloses your personal data to other parties. However, this right is restricted by legislation and the protection of privacy of third parties.
- To have incorrect personal data corrected
If the data is incorrect, incomplete or irrelevant, you are entitled to have the information corrected. You are also entitled to supplement incomplete personal data.
- To have your personal data deleted, restricted
You are entitled to have your personal data deleted if it is no longer necessary for the purposes for which it was compiled. However, such a right does not include processing of personal data which takes place based on a legal obligation pursuant to legislation.
- You may object to the way in which the municipality uses your personal data
You are also entitled to object to the processing of your personal data and request that the municipality restrict the use of data about you.
