Certification for Sustainable Tourism in Blekinge
Blekinge has great potential to be a model region for sustainable development in the Swedish tourism industry. Two UNESCO designations provide both responsibility and opportunities to invest in a development strategy for the region that attracts more visitors, but in a sustainable way.
In the fall of 2023, the project "Certification for Sustainable Tourism in Blekinge" was launched. Region Blekinge has granted project funding, and Blekinge Archipelago Biosphere Reserve is the project owner. Karlskrona Municipality contributes 20% of the costs in the form of personnel resources.
Achieving a sustainable destination requires broad collaboration between public and private stakeholders, as well as a clear strategic plan. As part of the previous project "Sustainable Tourism in World Heritage and Biosphere Reserve," which was conducted in collaboration between the World Heritage site and Blekinge Archipelago Biosphere Reserve during 2022-2023, a situation analysis was carried out to identify possible next steps for the sustainable development of tourism in these two UNESCO-designated sites, which are unique places on Earth.
In the "Certification for Sustainable Tourism in Blekinge" project, a joint certification process will be implemented with all stakeholders to achieve sustainability certification according to the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) by 2030.
Sustainable development is defined by three dimensions: social, economic, and ecological sustainability. Additionally, culture is increasingly highlighted as a potential fourth dimension. It is important to emphasize culture as a strategic tool for community development, with both intrinsic value and user value. Representatives from the World Heritage Council are engaged in the project and are collaborating with several stakeholders to support goal achievement.
